The revamped ride will reopen on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Previously, Disney only announced it would reopen this spring.

Disney shared two photos from inside the ride, including one of Buddy the robot in the new opening scene where guests can test their blasters.

The blasters themselves are now handheld and interact with updated targets. WDWNT got to play-test the blasters and targets last summer.

The ride also has all-new vehicles, replacing the original 1970s If You Had Wings vehicles. These will have new displays showcasing the revamped scoring system.

The climactic battle scene is also updated to add Buzz. Disney teased Toy Story 5 Easter eggs and more surprises in the ride.

The exterior is going through an update, including a new sign. Watch the video of Imagineers testing the ride:

Versions of the Buzz Lightyear shooting attraction have existed at all six Disney castle parks in the world. Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Hong Kong Disneyland closed in 2017 to become Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! The Tokyo Disneyland version closed in 2024 to be replaced by a Wreck-It Ralph attraction.

The updated technology on the Magic Kingdom version is expected to be similar to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! and Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue at Shanghai Disneyland. The Wreck-It Ralph attraction will have similar technological updates.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin closed last August for the major overhaul. Watch the original version of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin below.

From If You Had Wings to Space Ranger Spin

If You Had Wings was the original Omnimover attraction in Tomorrowland. Exploring the history of flight and sponsored by Eastern Air Lines, it opened in 1972. When the airline withdrew their sponsorship in 1987, the ride became If You Could Fly.

In 1989, Delta Air Lines began sponsoring the ride and it was renamed Delta Dreamflight. When Delta’s sponsorship ended in January 1996, the ride was just called Dreamflight from into June 1996. It was then renamed Take Flight.

In addition to name changes, it saw various thematic changes over the years. It closed for the Toy Story-inspired reimagining in January 1998 and reopened in October 1998, using the same ride track and vehicles as the original 1972 ride. Though inspired by the opening sequence of Toy Story 2, the Pixar film wouldn’t be released until November 1999.
