Kathryn Hahn will play Mother Gothel in Tangled. Earlier this year, the Agatha All Along actress was in talks for the role.
Kathryn Hahn as Mother gothel

Hahn posted the following Instagram video of her in a Mother Gothel t-shirt with the caption, “OOTD, Mother Gothel.” The video is a collaboration with Disney Studios, which confirmed on other social media accounts, “You want her to be the bad guy? FINE. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action Tangled.”
Hahn’s Instagram username was already @motherhahn and she has updated her bio to read “mother knows best” with a mirror emoji.
Hahn’s fellow Marvel star Scarlett Johansson was also rumored to play Gothel.
Hahn portrayed Agatha Harkness in WandaVision and Agatha All Along. She’s also known for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Step Brothers (2008), Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), and as the voice of Olivia Octavius in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Mother Gothel is a vain witch who kidnaps Princess Rapunzel to exploit the magical powers of her incredibly long hair to stay young and beautiful forever. She poses as Rapunzel’s loving but overprotective mother in a secluded tower for years.

This comes after the official announcement by Disney that Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim would play Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. Australian actress Teagan Croft is most recognizable for playing Rachel Azarath/Rachel Roth/Raven in Titans, the live-action adaptation of DC’s Teen Titans.
Disney Channel fans will instantly recognize Manheim, who played the lead role of Zed in the four Zombies films, with the latest being released just last year. He also recently appeared in the critically-acclaimed Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar as Peter and in an Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors in the starring role of Seymour.
Live-Action Tangled

The live-action version of Tangled has had a fittingly, well, tangled journey to production. We first reported on the development of a live-action Tangled remake in 2020, ten years after the original film’s release, and it was announced in December 2024 as being in development with The Greatest Showman film director Michael Gracey.
The project was then placed on “indefinite hold” in April 2025 following the disappointing performance of the live-action Snow White film, but resumed production in October 2025 after the blockbuster live-action Lilo & Stitch. Gracey is still attached to direct and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is still writing the script.
