New reports reveal that the Disney Cruise Line crew members and other cruise ship workers arrested last month were part of a crackdown linked to child sexual exploitation material (CSEM), not immigration status.
A Disney Cruise Line guest witnessed crew members of the Disney Magic arrested at the Port of San Diego on April 23. First reports from NBC San Diego indicated they were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed to the New York Post that they carried out the arrests. A total of 28 crew members were arrested across five ships from April 23 to April 25.
A CBP spokesperson said, “After boarding the vessels and interviewing 26 suspected crew members from the Philippines, one suspected crew member from Portugal, and one from Indonesia, officers confirmed all subjects were involved in either the receipt, possession, transportation, distribution, or viewing of CSEM or child pornography.”
The other cruise ships and lines involved have not been confirmed, but earlier reports indicated crew members of Holland America’s MV Zandaam were arrested on April 25.
A Disney Cruise Line spokesperson said, “We have a zero-tolerance policy for this type of behavior and fully cooperated with law enforcement. While the majority of these individuals were not from our cruise line, those who were are no longer with the company.”
The crew members had their visas revoked and were being deported from the U.S.
