As Shanghai Disneyland Resort celebrates its 10th birthday this week, rumors swirled that Disney & Shendi Group would be announcing a second park to be built alongside Shanghai Disneyland to mark the occasion. WDWNT was invited to the media festivities surrounding the aforementioned anniversary at the resort, and at said event, no announcement of a second park was made.
Many publications all but confirmed this would be happening soon, including Forbes:
“Disney is tipped to imminently announce that it is developing a new theme park as part of a $60 billion investment in its Experiences division.” “It is widely expected that the park will be built in Shanghai alongside its existing fairytale-themed outpost there.”
This announcement would have been the second new park announcement in two years, as Disney revealed in May 2025 that a Disneyland will also be coming to Abu Dhabi. It’s worth noting that the $60 billion Forbes is speaking of doesn’t involve that project, but could include the rumored second gate for Shanghai if built within the originally indicated decade of expenditure.
It is worth noting that Shendi executives indicated an initiative to make Shanghai Disney Resort and the surrounding resort district a multi-day vacation destination over the next few years with as-of-now undefined projects. This certainly hints at the second park, but they came short of making any commitment or announcement of such a project.
Disney Enchanted Star Hotel Name Announced
In November, 2025, Disney announced the construction of a fourth resort hotel, while the third remains under construction. The name of the third hotel, Disney Enchanted Star Hotel, was announced at today’s 10th anniversary event.
Disney Enchanted Star Hotel, which broke ground on August 31, 2023, and will open in the winter of 2027, will have Art Nouveau-inspired architecture paying homage to Shanghai’s early 20th-century architectural legacy. It will be the smallest of Shanghai Disney Resort’s hotels with just 400 rooms. The other two hotels are the 420-room Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and the 795-room Toy Story Hotel.

Now, it wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that all of this added hotel capacity likely means major expansion is on the way, but perhaps this week was just way too early for such an announcement to be made. If there is a second park to be constructed at Shanghai Disney Resort, and we think there is, Disney and Shendi will likely want to have all of these new resorts and the next land at Shanghai Disneyland completed ahead of it.
Shanghai Disneyland
Shanghai Disneyland opened on June 16, 2016, and is the first and only Disney theme park on mainland China. Hong Kong Disneyland is also in China, however it is located in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and operates independently from the mainland resort.
Shanghai Disneyland has the largest Disney Castle globally and was developed as a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group. Disney is paid royalties based on the resort’s revenues, though it doesn’t disclose the performance of individual parks in its filings.
The Chinese central government officially approved the resort in November of 2009, construction officially began in April 2011, and the park had its grand opening in June of 2016.
The park opened with six themed lands: Mickey Avenue, Gardens if Imagination, Fantasyland, Treasure Cove, Adventure Isle, and Tomorrowland.
Disney Pixar Toy Story Land was the first major expansion and seventh themed land, opened in April of 2018, and brought family attractions like Slinky Dog Spin and Rex’s Racer. In December 2026, Shanghai Disneyland opened the world’s first Zootopia-themed land, featuring Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. Sometime in the near future, a new land themed to Marvel’s Spider-Man will be opening as well.
Shanghai Disney welcomed its 100 millionth guest in November last year.
