Late last year, the Cairo spiny mouse retired from the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail to Rafiki’s Planet Watch after showing signs of labored breathing. The spider tortoise, already a resident of Gorilla Falls, was then moved to the former spiny mouse space behind the desk.

A newly-introduced male African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) is now where the tortoise used to be. African bullfrogs are native to the dry savannas of southeast Africa.

The researcher’s notes on the case read:

Thursday – Observed this bullfrog eating a small rodent that had come to drink at its pond.

Monday – This frog and several others were starting to bury themselves in the mud around their drying pond. Time for estivation?

Estivation (or aestivation) is similar to hibernation but takes place in the summer instead of winter. Animals go dormant in the warm weather to avoid damage from high temperatures.

We certainly don’t blame this bullfrog if he wants to nap through the Florida summer.

The room also has a female African bullfrog in a separate habitat.
