We’ve been chronicling the progress of the neat, retro-style fountain that’s making a comeback at the entrance to EPCOT. This new fountain is a fascinating homage to ’80s EPCOT, when a rippling fountain with towering lucite pylons etched with the park’s logo welcomed guests to the world of tomorrow. We saw some test tiles installed back in early January, but those were removed as work along the geometric base of the fountain continued. Now, it seems like the first set of finalized tiles have finally been installed.
You can see the first segment as a raised overlay that was placed on top of the center fountain base. Various wooden pieces are in place to keep the overlay flush against the surface.
A closer look reveals some of the geometric elements of the fountain’s new surface, featuring raised, rippled edges to add even more kinetic energy to the fountain.
The scalloped pattern mirrors the design revealed in the early concept art for the fountain.
We expect to see more of these completed tile segments to be installed along the center of the fountain in the coming days.
With the rest of the center still left to be completed, we won’t be seeing the retro lucite pylons anytime soon, but the progress at the fountain site is very promising of a fully refreshed EPCOT entrance in the coming months.
It looks like each little segment is wired in. (Blue cable) do you think they will all light up? Or is it rope for lifting into position?
that looks like blue rigging rope, although, i do like you like your light up idea
Agreed. The rope is not equally centered in each pocket, so I feel that that’s an indicator it’s just for installation and not for lighting effects.
