After several months as only a retail location for Legacy Lightsabers, Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has now reopened its build-your-own lightsaber experience. Capacity is limited in the workshop to follow social distancing guidelines, so reservations are recommended. We visited to see what has changed about the experience since it first opened in August 2019.

Reservations ensure that you’ll get the chance to craft your own lightsaber. Unfortunately, dates ranging from today to September 25th have no availability. If you want to book a workshop reservation, then you should do so right away. Dates and times are filling up quicker than force lightning. You can reserve your session in the My Disney Experience app. Login or create an account to access the reservation queue.

After booking your reservation, make your way to Black Spire Outpost in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at your appointed time. Check in with one of Savi’s Gatherers, and you’ll be guided through the entire experience. Make sure you arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Also, be sure to gather your entire party before checking in, as they must all be present to enter. Lastly, make sure you have your reservation confirmation, a photo ID, and the credit card you used at the time of booking.

As before, there is a cabinet with parts for you to see exactly which lightsaber you’d like to opt for.

Once you’ve decided, socially-distanced numbered markers are set up for you to check in and finalize payment.

You’re given a pin to match your lightsaber design, and a color-coded boarding group card.

As always, be careful to follow social distancing directions by keeping your party by the designated floor markers, and wear a mask at all times. Soon, you’ll be ready to assemble your customized lightsaber and battle the forces of the dark side.

The process appears to be the same as before, except for the special care that cast members and guests take to remain safe. The experience takes place in a cramped space and the lighting is dim, however only a few guests will be admitted at a time.

In our opinion, the experience of building a custom lightsaber hadn’t changed as much we anticipated. We enjoyed that you can still build with a friend, and we weren’t separated by Plexiglass dividers, though guests do still have to stand behind the main builder. The biggest difference to us that we noticed was the additional room that was added to each side of the workstations, and that was a welcomed change as the experience didn’t feel as crowded.

While visiting Savi’s Workshop and creating a custom lightsaber is on the expensive side, we highly recommend this experience, and maybe even enjoy it a little more now with the added room around the workstations. For a full walkthrough of the experience, check out our YouTube video below!
