Marvel Studios has found its Kamala Khan.
Deadline‘s Justin Kroll reports that the studio has cast Iman Vellani to play “Ms. Marvel’s” titular superhero in the upcoming Disney+ series.
According to Marvel, Khan is a Pakistani-American teenager who has the ability to morph her shape and size. Khan idolizes heroes like Captain Marvel a.k.a Carol Danvers, who in the comics, previously held the Ms. Marvel moniker.
This will be Vellani’s first major Hollywood production, though far from the last, as Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has said that Khan will also be part of upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Vellani was part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Next Wave Committee for 2019-20, where when asked who would play her in a movie, she said, “Iron Man… duh.”
The studio has also named Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon as directors for the series.
The MCU is looking to have a large presence on the streaming service. Recently, Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany was cast as the lead in the upcoming “She-Hulk” series, while Samuel L. Jackson is set to reprise his role as Nick Fury in a series of his own.
Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ series, WandaVision, is set to premiere later this year.
