Passion Fruit Cheesecake with Toasted Macadamia Nuts —Hawai’i
NOTE: The Hawai’i marketplace does not open until August 15 for this year’s event. However, this dish is returning, so you can read our review from last year below.
This cheesecake is rather tame on the fruit flavor, the passion fruit on top is subtle enough to be noticed without overbearing making this cheesecake nice and balanced. The macadamia nuts paired with the cheesecake are excellent. It’s not the most exciting dessert at the festival, but it’s worth a second look.
Canadian Cheddar Cheese and Bacon Soup served with a Pretzel Roll — Canada
This soup is creamy and has bacon bites throughout. Hints of cheddar cheese make this the best soup on property. It is very hot out for soup, but it still hits the spot. We recommend dipping the pretzel bread into the soup. As good as it is, the price is still a bit high for the portion. Read our full review of the Canada marketplace here.
Pão de Queijo: Brazilian Cheese Bread — Brazil
It’s incredibly difficult to recommend these at over $2 each for a piece of cheese bread, even if they are pretty spectacular. You can find a bag of Brazi-Bites in your local grocer for a fraction of the cost if you want to indulge in cheese paradise. Read our full review of the Brazil booth here.
Griddled Cheese with Pistachios and Honey — Greece
This dish was really enjoyable. The cheese flavor was similar to raclette, griddled with a nice, crisp crust on the outside. The honey was a perfect topping for the salty cheese, and the pistachios added an additional crunch for a great texture. Check out our full menu review of the Greece booth here.
Schinkennudeln – Germany
We love the flavors of this dish, but it’s very, very heavy. It would be the perfect dish to warm up with in the fall when it finally cools off a bit. It’s pasta gratin with ham, onions, and cheese. Everything fits together nicely and is layered like a casserole. It may be a bit greasy, but its flavor and large portion size for sharing make it worth it. Read our full menu review here.
Warm Raclette Swiss Cheese – The Alps
Every aspect of this dish is sweet, except the Swiss cheese. The smell of said cheese is overpowering. It comes with two pieces of toast, two poached pear slices, and two and a half figs. This dish would be great for fall weather, but it’s awful in the heat of the summer. The combination of sweet swiss cheese and the very angry sun made this dish hard to swallow. Also, the toast was too tough to chew! We would pass on this one. Check out our full review of the Alps menu here.
Crispy Paneer with Mango-Curry Ketchup — India
This is Indian cottage cheese which is not bad without the sauce. It has a really unique flavor, a mix between cottage cheese and ricotta. The sauce is extremely overpowering, tasting like ketchup and mango. We would recommend going light on the sauce when you dip. Otherwise, it may be too heavy.
Crispy Barbecue Pork Rinds with Pimento Cheese — Swanky Saucy Swine
Our group was split on this; some liked it, and some thought it was terrible. Some of the pork rinds were a little over-fried and too hard to chew. The pimento was rich and cheesy with a peppery heat that was very present. However, there was also a sweetness that some of us thought ruined the dish. If you don’t mind the blending of sweet barbecue and savory pimento cheese, this might appeal to you. You can read our review of the entire menu here.
Smoked Corned Beef — located at Flavors from Fire
This nearly perfect dish is a returning favorite. The smoked corned beef is flavorful, tender, and has a great slathering of sauce on it. There are plenty of chips to help pick up the meat and fondue — all three together are a match made in heaven. It’s a must-try item, even though it isn’t new. Honestly, everything at Flavors from Fire is worth trying. You can read more about the menu here!
Mac & Cheese – Mac & Eats
Three varieties of mac & cheese are included as options for Emile’s Fromage Montage.
Traditional
NOTE: Mac & Eats does not open until August 15 for this year’s event. However, two dishes are returning items, and our reviews from 2021 can be found below.
This is an outstanding basic macaroni and cheese. The cheddar is smooth and creamy, and the panko adds the perfect amount of crunch. What takes it to the next level is a small amount of spice that we believe may have been paprika.
Cowboy
A good upgrade to the traditional mac & cheese. The smoked pork belly and burnt ends were great complements, although the burnt ends were small and few and far between. But we’re not complaining! This is still a phenomenal dish. The peppers add a kick, and the crispy onion pieces add a nice crunch to it.
Chili-Cheese (Plant-based)
This dish debuts on August 15. We will update this article with our review at that time.
Completer Prize – Strawberry Cheesecake DOLE Whip in a Souvenir Cup
Once you’ve collected five stamps, you can head down to Shimmering Sips Hosted by Corkcicle for your prize — the strawberry cheesecake DOLE whip in a collector cup!
The cup has the Emile’s Fromage Montage logo with the rat himself above and slices of cheese to the sides.
Even though this treat says strawberry, we only get vanilla flavoring in the dole whip. No hints of strawberry in the slightest. You can smell something fruity, but it’s very subtle. All in all, the ice cream was still very good! It was refreshing and not too heavy on the stomach.
The cup is really cute too!
The cheesecake bite was delicious! But we would have liked it more if they had mixed in small bites of cheesecake. Still, a great treat to round out your Fromage Montage.
