Doughy, a little fishy, but overall pretty solid. The key lime aïoli is a nice touch as the tartness counters the fishiness of the fried conch fritters well. It’s not a bad size serving given the price, and it’s also a nice offering since Olivia‘s Cafe at Disney’s Old Key West Resort got rid of their conch fritters.

The two new dishes here are both huge successes. This is the best Cuban sandwich we’ve had. Everything was balanced and fresh.

The shortcake proved to be much harder than we thought it would be. It’s very crunchy, because it’s far too hard. It tastes like a stale cookie. The whipped cream is almost flavorless. It has too much salt; we don’t even feel like we’ve eaten a dessert. Salty but sweet can work, but this is on the opposite end of the spectrum.  It’s stale, hard, and gross. This is one of the worst items we’ve had in all our years of reviewing festivals. We could make this better at home.

There are a lot of cucumber-heavy drinks this year. Those who enjoy cucumber drinks may enjoy this, but our group wasn’t partial to any of the cucumber-forward options.

*NEW* Brewery Ommegang Melon Falls Watermelon Kolsch, Cooperstown, NY (6.0% ABV) – $5.75 for 6 oz., $9.75 for 12 oz.

From Brewery Ommegang: “Cascade down Melon Falls with this easy-drinking watermelon kolsch. A light, refreshing beer layered with multiple additions of juicy watermelon puree throughout the fermentation and lagering process. Creating the perfect infusion of flavor and aroma. Crisp, fruity, and the embodiment of a fresh-picked watermelon. We recommend pairing the beer with outdoor adventures and friends. Hidden bonus? You don’t have to worry about the seeds.”

*NEW* Orange Blossom Brewing Co. Starlight Papaya Pilsner, Orlando, FL (5.5% ABV) – $5.75 for 6 oz., $9.75 for 12 oz.

From correspondence with Orange Blossom Brewing Co., this beer is exclusive to the festival. “This honey pilsner blends bright starfruit and juicy papaya, giving you a refreshing taste of paradise in every sip.”

*NEW* Southern Tier Brewing Co. Strawberry Shortcake Imperial Ale, Lakewood, NY (8.6% ABV) – $5.75 for 6 oz., $9.75 for 12 oz.

From Southern Tier Brewing Co.: “Delicious layers of tart strawberries, sweet vanilla, and flakey shortcake create the perfect warm-weather Imperial Ale. Picked fresh from the patch, Strawberry Shortcake tastes like a picnic on a sunny, spring day!”

It has a strong cucumber flavor. It’s a little sharp but refreshing. The gin gives it a slight improvement over the non-alcoholic version.
