Voyage of the Little Mermaid at Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been closed since COVID-19 shut down Walt Disney World in March 2020. But Disney is still surveying guests about it.
Walt Disney World Survey
The survey asked what we thought of every Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction. We had the option to select multiple of the following options:
- Boring
- Immersive
- Insensitive
- Personal Favorite
- Iconic
- Dated
Users could also select “Not familiar” or “None of these.”
After selecting that Voyage of the Little Mermaid was iconic and a personal favorite, Disney asked what makes us say that. It was the only Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction that the survey asked for additional feedback about.
Voyage of the Little Mermaid
Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a live stage show that tells the story of the 1989 film, mostly through its iconic songs. “Under the Sea” is performed with puppets and a black light effect, hiding the puppeteers from view. Ariel sings “Part of Your World,” and a 12-foot-tall Ursula puppet performs “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” The show speeds through the rest of the story using a montage of clips from the film, before Ariel reunites with Prince Eric and a curtain of water falls.
When Walt Disney World reopened in July 2020, most live entertainment remained closed. Slowly, shows returned, some with physical distancing changes and smaller casts. But Voyage of the Little Mermaid remain shuttered. In September 2020, we noticed that the attraction’s billboard had been removed. Disney released a statement after our post, however, to say the billboard was being refurbished. And sure enough, a new billboard was installed soon after.
Yet, Disney remained silent about the show potentially reopening. The wait time and FastPass+ sign were removed in September 2021, and benches were added to the queue to convert it into a covered seating area.
In February 2022, Disney actually released a limited edition pin celebrating 30 years of Voyage of the Little Mermaid.
It’s clear Disney hasn’t given up on the attraction, not only because of the survey but because no other theming has been removed from the building and it hasn’t been used for something else like a meet and greet.
