Disney Cruise Line has shared a first look at the previously announced Broadway-style stage production of “Hercules” that will debut aboard the Disney Destiny cruise ship.

First Look at ‘Hercules’ Aboard Disney Destiny
First announced last summer, “Disney Hercules” will “stay true to the story and spirit” of the film while presenting a contemporary staging of the show. Featuring iconic songs like “Go the Distance,” “Zero to Hero,” and “I Won’t Say I’m in Love,” the show will feature new musical arrangements inspired by gospel music “with the energy of a pop concert.”
In addition to all of the songs from the film, “Disney Hercules” will include the theatrical debut of “Shooting Star,” a ballad that was cut from the animated film, written by Alan Menken and David Zippel.
The set will take inspiration from the filmed performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar” starring John Legend, featuring two large scaffolding pieces with modern lighting and moving staircases. Grecian pillars and other decor will be mixed in with the modern aesthetic. The same set designer who crafted the look for “Disney The Tale of Moana” aboard the Disney Treasure is also responsible for this production.
Puppetry will be a major part of the show’s storytelling, as seen in the concept art above of the large, multi-headed Hydra puppet. Award-winning puppet designer Michael Curry is responsible for the puppets in this production, following up his work on “Disney The Tale of Moana.” Other puppets will be featured to represent the mythological beasts Hercules will encounter along his hero’s journey. Disney Cruise Line has stated that their goal is to “one-up” the puppets used in “Disney The Tale of Moana.”
Gods, mortals, and mythical beings from the movie will be part of the story, with many represented in new ways. Disney Cruise Line will also utilize technology that has not been used in a theatrical setting to depict the Titans. Hercules will be portrayed by Corey Bradford, who appeared at the media panel to sing “Go the Distance.” You can watch our video below:
Like in the film, the Muses will be the show’s storytellers and will appear in several interludes during scene changes to keep the story moving. Costuming will be utilized to show the contrast between the high-fashion opulence of the gods and the humble attire of mortals on Earth.
Developed exclusively for the Disney Destiny, “Disney Hercules” will be one of three stage shows aboard the new ship. Guest favorites “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” and “Disney Seas the Adventure” will also be presented.
