Star Wars: A New Hope, the film that launched the famous franchise, will return to theaters for its 50th anniversary in 2027.
Star Wars: A New Hope Re-Release
The film was originally released as just Star Wars on May 25, 1977. Now titled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, it will be back in theaters on April 30, 2027, Variety reports.
Though a month ahead of its actual anniversary, the April re-release ensures A New Hope doesn’t step on the toes of Star Wars: Starfighter, a new film hitting theaters on May 28, 2027. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth.
Before Starfighter, Disney and Lucasfilm will release The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22, 2026. It will be the first new Star Wars film in theaters since Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
Star Wars: A New Hope was written and directed by George Lucas. It was produced by Gary Kurtz. It stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, and Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Other Star Wars films in development include a sequel starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. James Mangold is set to direct a film about the origins of the Force. Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni is leading a film set between The Mandalorian and The Force Awakens. Taika Waititi is still attached to direct a film while Simon Kinberg is developing a new Star Wars trilogy.
