A new permit suggests the Humunga Kowabunga slide(s) at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park will be rebuilt.

The Notice of Commencement calls for general construction at Humunga Kowabunga, contracting ProSlide Technology, Inc. ProSlide is not only an expert in water slide design and construction — the company built the original and 1990s versions of Humunga Kowabunga.

The original version of Humunga Kowabunga was a pair of slides that opened with the park in 1989. These were replaced by a trio of slides in 1998.

The permit was filed by Disney’s Facility Asset Management (FAM) rather than by Walt Disney Imagineering. FAM usually handles maintenance projects, while Imagineering is in charge of creative decisions.

The contracting of ProSlide by FAM indicates the ride won’t be redesigned but it could be rebuilt to ensure it’s up to modern standards.

Construction could potentially begin during Typhoon Lagoon’s upcoming refurbishment. The park will close in February and Blizzard Beach will reopen. Both parks will be open at the same time by late May.

The permit’s filing follows the conclusion of a 2023 lawsuit filed against Disney for a “painful wedgie” suffered on Humunga Kowabunga. The plaintiff recently voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit.

Another lawsuit against Disney filed last year seeks damages for a man who fell off his inner tube on a Blizzard Beach water slide. Despite Disney claiming the man exceeded the ride’s “posted” weight limit, a WDWNT investigation discovered no weight limits were posted at Blizzard Beach.
