The Anubis head on display inside Indiana Jones: Den of Destiny at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is in fact a piece of The Great Movie Ride history.
The Great Movie Ride Anubis Head
On a recent visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we stopped in to the Indiana Jones: Den of Destiny lounge to enjoy some “refreshing libations,” and realized that this was indeed one of the Great Movie Ride Anubis heads once seen on the attraction.
In the scene, guests would travel into a set decorated like an Egyptian tomb filled with Anubis statues and snakes. Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne would then inform guests that they were in a scene from “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and Audio-Animatronic figures of Indiana Jones and Sallah could be seen from the right side of the ride vehicle as they struggled to lift the Ark of the Covenant.
This Great Movie Ride Anubis head seems to have gotten a visual refresh, and now sport a stonelike appearance. On the ride, the heads were originally painted black with sharp, white teeth, pink gums and tongue.

The Great Movie Ride
The Great Movie Ride opened with Disney’s Hollywood Studios, then Disney-MGM Studios, on May 1, 1989. It was very much a spectacular journey into the movies, and highlighted classics films like “Footlight Parade,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Mary Poppins,” “Alien,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and, of course, “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
The ride took its final trip into the movies on August 13, 2017, and closed to make way for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which is now open in the same show building.
