214 Actors Laid Off as “Mickey and the Magical Map” and “Frozen: Live at the Hyperion” Are Permanently Closed at Disneyland Resort

While news of the “Mickey and the Magical Map” and “Frozen: Live at the Hyperion” shows began circulating earlier this weekend, according to The Orange County Register, Disneyland plans to lay off over 200 actors as the shows have officially ended their run.

From The Orange County Register:

End of run notices have been sent to actors in the “Frozen: Live at the Hyperion” at Disney California Adventure and “Mickey and the Magical Map” at Disneyland, according to the American Guild of Variety Artists West.

“We have been told that Disney will be laying off 214 of our members which represents approximately 70% of our members currently employed at the Disneyland resort,” AGVA West Disneyland representative Steve Rosen said via email.

AGVA West remains in bargaining talks with Disney.

“At this time, no AGVA members have received layoff notices,” Rosen said via email.

There’s precedent to believe that the shows may possibly return, but technically, an end of run notice indicates that the show has been permanently closed.

Performers were informed via email late Friday night about the show closures.

Both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure remain shuttered due to ongoing back-and-forth between state officials and Disney executives regarding reopening dates and guidelines. No reopening date has been identified or announced as of yet.

“Mickey and the Magical Map” premiered at the Fantasyland Theatre in Disneyland on May 25, 2013. “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” brought the magic of a full-fledged Broadway production to Disney California Adventure, debuting on May 27, 2016. Our hearts go out to all performers and Cast Members affected by these layoffs.

  1. I really liked the Magical Map show. It was one of the few places, Mulan and Pocahontas took to the stage for their own part.
