PHOTOS: Innoventions West Demolition Accelerates Quickly, Leaving Exposed Infrastructure at EPCOT

We’re coming close to the end of an era at EPCOT.

The ongoing demolition of Innoventions West seems to be moving especially fast, meaning the structure, which has stood since the park opened in 1982, could soon be coming down.

Since just yesterday, the roof panels have been completely stripped off this section of the building, leaving the building’s bare bones exposed.

A light structure is in place to help illuminate Spaceship Earth at night, since the lights of Innoventions are long gone.

We happened to take these photos as the sun was setting, serving as a metaphor for the state of the once proud pavilion.

A small section of panels remain on the right hand side, though at the pace they seem to be working at, they could be gone within a matter of days.

Over on the side closer to Imagination! and The Land, the remnants of the roof have been removed, exposing the framework.

Only the panels on the walls remain for now.

Roof removal seems to be working its way north towards Spaceship Earth, leaving the building completely gutted.

Depending on where you stand, you can see clear through to what’s left of Innoventions East, which is undergoing a major remodeling to become home to a new Starbucks location as well as a restaurant.

Still, even with all the improvements, it’s sad to see a piece of EPCOT’s history fade away.

Eventually, this section of the park will be the World Celebration neighborhood. A Festival Center may no longer be in the works, but EPCOT promises a new “festival area.”

EPCOT World Celebration concept art

Though it’s hard to know how plans have changed due to COVID-19, above is the original concept art for World Celebration, in which the Innoventions West building has been completely removed and replaced with a garden area and the Journey of Water “Moana” walkthrough attraction.

  1. i know that some popular attractions from Innoventions West will be relocated elsewhere (atleast thats what ive read last year), Character Spot, Club cool. But the one thing that i miss the most is the big open air conditioned area at the back where they had framed pics about the progression of Epcot from opening day to current day.
Tom, do you know if an area like this will be in the future Epcot? my thoughts are : odyssey center??
