Disney Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane Were Not Acknowledged Once at Destination D23 Event

Destination D23 2021 just wrapped up at the Walt Disney World Resort, and while plenty of big announcements were made (such as the return of Fantasmic with a new scene), plenty of recent additions were touted as well. However, one big recent addition was left out of any mention at the fan event—the Disney Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane systems.

Although Disney recapped many developments from the past year and a half, as well as revealed plenty of returning and upcoming offerings, Disney Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane, the paid replacement for the former FastPass, were not mentioned at all through the weekend.

This is rather curious, as the Walt Disney Company just two weeks ago praised the success of Disney Genie+ in their latest earnings call, with CEO Bob Chapek claiming that nearly 1/3 of Guests visiting Walt Disney World since launch have upgraded to Genie+. The reason behind the reportedly-successful system’s omission remains unknown, but it may be the same reason why Disney CEO Bob Chapek reportedly didn’t show up: fear of a negative reaction from the crowd in attendance.

  1. Probably for the same reason Bad for Business Bobby couldn’t make it there in person… To avoid the boo’s.

  2. I think you’re right. Any mention of Genie, Genie+ or LL would have definitely brought some boos from the crowd as would have the sight of Bob Chapek. No booing allowed! It’s rough times at the Disney parks right now. I look forward to the snarky response to your post from Disney (you know it’s coming) ;).

  3. visited disneyworld second week of November and tried genie+ the first day. It was so bad we didn’t use it the rest of our trip. It is fine for the first ride if you get up at 7am. The problem is you can’t book your second ride until you enter the queue of the first ride. On busy days all the good rides don’t have availability until much later in the day or evening. It’s basically useless at Hollywood studios. The only park to use it would be magic kingdom on less busy days. Eventually word will get out how bad this system is.
