Disney Cruise Line is currently celebrating 25 years of sailing, having been founded in 1995 but setting out on its first voyage in 1998. The cruise line currently has five ships: Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. The Disney Treasure and another unnamed ship are on the way, as well as the recently acquired Global Dream, which will be renamed.

Though you may want to choose your Disney Cruise Line sailing based on the destinations, you may also want to consider the ships themselves. Let’s break down the major details of each ship.

Disney Magic

The Disney Magic was Disney Cruise Line’s first ship and set the standard for future ships. The design was inspired by classic ocean liners but with a Disney twist. Instead of the usual black hull, the Magic was given a “Monica Blue” hull so dark it looks black in some lighting. The name “Monica Blue” came from a Cast Member on the design team who wore blue pants to work one day. The pants were the perfect color, so they re-created it and named it after the Cast Member, Monica.

In order to evoke Mickey Mouse with the design, Disney wanted yellow lifeboats. However, regulations state lifeboats must be orange. Disney got special permission from the U.S. Coast Guard for their boats to be yellow. The iconic design was topped off with two red smokestacks, each featuring the logo for Disney Cruise Line: a white Mickey head against three blue waves. All Disney Cruise Line ships have so far followed this same approximate design and color scheme.

Each Disney Cruise Line ship has a godmother (or godchildren), which is a long-standing maritime tradition. The godmother is usually present at the ship’s christening and may be the one to crack a bottle of Champagne against the hull, although that tradition has mostly fallen out of practice. Patricia Disney, Roy E. Disney’s first wife, was the godmother of Disney Magic.

While later Disney Cruise Line ships would be christened days before their maiden voyage, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder were both christened months later.

Theming

Each Disney Cruise Line ship has a special character in a medallion image on the bow of the ship, a character statue in the atrium (or Grand Hall), and a giant character figure “painting” the ship’s name on the stern. These are the Disney Magic characters:

• Atrium character: Helmsman Mickey
• Stern character: Goofy

Disney Magic has an art deco design. The atrium originally had a glass chandelier designed by Dale Chihuly, but this was replaced during the 2013 refurbishment. The atrium also originally had two staircases, but one was knocked out, and Disney Cruise Line ships now consistently have a single atrium staircase.

Dining

Each Disney Cruise Line ship has three unique table-service restaurants. There’s always an upscale restaurant off of the atrium. These days, at least one restaurant also includes some form of entertainment.

• Rapunzel’s Royal Table: Celebrate Rapunzel’s birthday as she, Flynn, and other friends perform songs from “Tangled.” Featuring German-inspired cuisine.
• Animator’s Palate: A version of Animator’s Palate is on the first four Disney Cruise Line ships. Each features screen-based entertainment. On 7-night Magic sailings, this entertainment involves guests drawing a cartoon character, which gets animated for a climactic, musical spectacular. On other sailings, guests join Sorcerer Mickey to learn about the evolution of animation. Featuring Pacific Island, Asian, and Californian cuisine.
• Lumiere’s: Themed to “Beauty and the Beast,” Lumiere’s features French cuisine.

Disney schedules your dinners for you, so you’re guaranteed to visit each restaurant. But you can pay extra for an even fancier meal at Palo: “Savor classic Northern Italian cooking with a modern twist at this chic adult-exclusive restaurant—it’s a feast for the senses!”

There are also a number of poolside quick-service venues and Cabanas, the buffet.

Entertainment

On deck, “Mickey’s Sail-A-Wave Party!… A Bon Voyage Celebration” is performed on the first day of each sailing aboard the Disney Magic.

Disney Cruise Line was the first cruise line to launch fireworks at sea — and is currently the only cruise line to do so. Every Disney Cruise Line ship has a Pirate Night featuring a deck stage show and fireworks presentation. Disney Magic also has the Frozen Deck Party on select 7-night sailings.

Disney Cruise Line features several original Broadway-style stage shows, which sometimes rotate to different ships. Each ship has three shows at a time. At least one is always inspired by a classic Disney movie, while another is an original story for Disney Cruise Line.

Currently (as of April 2023), Disney Magic has “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story,” “Tangled: The Musical,” and “Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic.”

Fitness, Sports, & Recreation

The fitness centers of Disney Cruise Line ships include the following:

The Wide World of Sports Deck has open-air basketball courts and ping-pong tables for guests to enjoy.

Shuffleboard and a running track are also outside on deck 4. The running track of the Disney Magic is a 1/3-mile lap around the ship.

Pools, Slides, & Splash Areas

Disney Magic’s family pool is Goofy’s Pool while the Quiet Cove Pool is the adults-only pool.

The AquaLab is a splash-and-play area for kids, featuring the Twist ‘n’ Spout water slide. The Twist ‘n’ Spout is a 250-ft double-looping slide. Guests must be at least 38″ tall to ride and adult supervision is required for guests under the age of 16.

The ship’s bigger water slide is the AquaDunk, accessible at the forward funnel on deck 13. This body slide starts you 37 ft above the decks below, takes you over the side of the ship on a 20 ft curvature, and plummets a total of 212 ft. Guests must be at least 48″ tall to ride.

Youth Areas

On all the ships, little ones from 6 months to 3 years old (or starting from 1 year old on Transatlantic, Hawai’i, and Panama Canal itineraries) can play and nap in “it’s a small world” Nursery. The nursery does cost extra, starting at $4.50/hour for one child, and advance reservations are required.

Just like at Disney Parks, young guests can become princesses or pirates at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique aboard Disney Cruise Line ships.

Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Disney’s Oceaneer Lab are for children ages 3 to 12. Here are the rooms of Disney’s Oceaneer Club on the Disney Magic:

Disney’s Oceaneer Lab has the following spaces:

• Animator’s Studio: Create original hand-drawn art and learn to sketch your favorite Disney pals.
• Captain’s Workshop: Kick back, watch Disney movies, and play video games amidst pirate-y props in this spacious play area which also hosts numerous activities throughout the day.
• Craft Studio: Creative types can channel their right-brain brilliance into a tactile masterpiece at this hands-on, arts-and-crafts studio.
• The Wheelhouse: Using large LCD screens and navigation simulators, captains-in-training can steer their very own Disney ship through the Caribbean Sea!

• Anyone Can Cook: Inspired by “Ratatouille,” kids will learn how to measure and mix ingredients before baking up a batch of delish chocolate-chip cookies, leaving the best part to last—the taste test!
• Piston Cup Challenge: Build race cars from bars of soap for good clean fun and high-octane laughs based on Disney’s “Cars.”

Edge is for tweens and teens from 11 to 14 (11- and 12-year-olds can choose to visit Disney’s Oceaneer Club & Lab or Edge). Entertainment at Edge includes:

• A 98ʺ flat-screen plasma TV for watching Disney movies

Next up is Vibe, for guests from 14 to 17. It’s housed in the forward funnel of the Disney Magic and includes:

Vibe and Edge host various activities aimed at tweens/teens both inside the youth clubs and throughout the ship, including pool parties and lunches.

Nightclubs & Lounges

Most of the nightclubs and lounges are open during the day for all guests, hosting activities like trivia, but become adults-only at night.

After Hours — the adult district — houses Fathoms, Keys, and O’Gills Pub. D Lounge is where most family activities are hosted. Near Quiet Cove Pool is the Signals bar, and Cove Café is a coffee shop.

Promenade Lounge, another family lounge, has been rethemed to be Soul Cat Lounge, inspired by Pixar’s “Soul.”

Disney Wonder

Though the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder have the same capacity, the Wonder is actually slightly smaller than the Magic. It has many of the same amenities as its older sister ship.

Uniquely, Disney Wonder’s godmother is a fictional character: Tinker Bell.

The Sailing Away Deck Party is performed on deck on the first day. Every Disney Cruise Line ship has a Pirate Night featuring a deck stage show and fireworks presentation.

The Disney Dream is the current home of Marvel Day at Sea, which originally debuted on the Disney Magic. More than 30 superheroes and villains appear on the ship during this day-long celebration.

The live stage shows include “Beauty and the Beast,” inspired by the live-action remake of the classic animated film. They also have “The Golden Mickeys” and “Disney’s Believe.”

On the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, guests of all ages can play Midship Detective Agency: “Use clues, technology and good old-fashioned intuition to guide you on this interactive ship-wide caper.”

The AquaDuck debuted on the Disney Dream. It can be found on deck 12, aft. The 765-foot waterslide takes guests all around the ship, and off the side (in an enclosed, transparent tube). Guests ride a 2-person raft. They must be 42″ tall or taller to ride with a buddy. Single riders must be 54″ or taller. Guests must also be 7 years old or older to ride alone. Kids under 7 (if they are 42″ or taller) must ride with someone at least 14 years old.

Also on deck 12 is the Funnel Puddle, a family wading pool. Little ones can play in Nemo’s Reef on deck 11, a 1,500-square-foot splash deck featuring fountains, bubblers, and pop jets.

The family pools are Mickey’s Pool and Donald’s Pool. Mickey’s Pool has a yellow slide supported by Mickey’s giant gloved hand. Guests must be between 38″ (3′ 2″) and 64″ (5′ 4″) tall to use the slide.

In addition to the adults-exclusive Quiet Cove Pool, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have Satellite Falls, an adults-exclusive wading pool.

Youth Areas

• Playmation: Battle villains, complete missions and save mankind—all by joining forces with Marvel’s The Avengers! After donning state-of-the-art gear, young superheroes-in-training can interact with the game’s environment via every move they make.

Entertainment

The Sailing Away Deck Party is performed on deck on the first day. Every Disney Cruise Line ship has a Pirate Night featuring a deck stage show and fireworks presentation.

Disney Fantasy hosts Pixar Day at Sea featuring character appearances, special entertainment, and themed dining.

The stage shows are “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular,” “Disney’s Believe,” and “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular.”

On the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, guests of all ages can play Midship Detective Agency: “Use clues, technology, and good old-fashioned intuition to guide you on this interactive ship-wide caper.”

The fitness centers of Disney Cruise Line ships include the following:

Pools, Slides, & Splash Areas

The AquaDuck can be found on deck 12, aft. The 765-foot waterslide takes guests all around the ship, and off the side (in an enclosed, transparent tube). Guests ride a 2-person raft. They must be 42″ tall or taller to ride with a buddy. Single riders must be 54″ or taller. Guests must also be 7 years old or older to ride alone. Kids under 7 (if they are 42″ or taller) must ride with someone at least 14 years old.

Also on deck 12 is the Funnel Puddle, a family wading pool. Little ones can play in Nemo’s Reef on deck 11, a 1,500-square-foot splash deck featuring fountains, bubblers, and pop jets.

The family pools are Mickey’s Pool and Donald’s Pool. Mickey’s Pool has a yellow slide supported by Mickey’s giant gloved hand. Guests must be between 38″ (3′ 2″) and 64″ (5′ 4″) tall to use the slide.

In addition to the adults-exclusive Quiet Cove Pool, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have Satellite Falls, an adults-exclusive wading pool.

Youth Areas

Little ones from 6 months to 3 years old (or starting from 1 year old on Transatlantic, Hawai’i, and Panama Canal itineraries) can play and nap in “it’s a small world” Nursery. The nursery does cost extra, starting at $4.50/hour for one child, and advance reservations are required.

Just like at Disney Parks, young guests can become princesses or pirates at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique aboard Disney Cruise Line ships.

Oceaneer Club rooms:

Two of the three main restaurants of Disney Wish are split into two dining rooms, the first Disney Cruise Line ship to do this.

• Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure: Celebrate the engagement of Queen Anna and Kristoff with live music and Norwegian-inspired dishes.
• Worlds of Marvel – “Avengers: Quantum Encounter”: Worlds of Marvel is split into two identical dining rooms, with food inspired by the different locations and organizations of the Marvel universe.
• 1923: Dine on Californian cuisine in either the Walt Disney room or Roy Disney room, which both feature sketches, props, animation cels, and other items representing animated Disney films.

Palo was revamped into Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish: “Inspired by Cogsworth from ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ this adult-exclusive restaurant strikes a balance between time-honored Italian fare and modern steakhouse dining.”

Next to Palo Steakhouse is Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement, another adult-exclusive restaurant featuring French fare.

The poolside quick-service dining is Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods, featuring Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue, Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill, Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream, and Donald’s Cantina. Instead of Cabanas, the Disney Wish buffet is Marceline Market.

Entertainment

“Set Sail on a Wish” is a unique sail-away party aboard the Disney Wish on the first day of each sailing.

The stage shows on the Disney Wish are “Disney Seas the Adventure” starring Minnie and Goofy, “The Little Mermaid” (brand new to the ship), and “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular.”

Like the Dream and Fantasy, the Wish has an interactive game to play all over the ship: Disney Uncharted Adventure. This game is played using the Disney Cruise Line app and has guests saving the Wishing Star from Disney Villains.

These are on deck 11 and both can be covered during shows like “Set Sail on a Wish.” Mickey’s Pool is actually built into the deck stage, while Minnie’s pool is across the deck and is covered to create more standing room.

The smaller pools on elevated platforms of deck 11 are Daisy’s Pool and Pluto’s Pool, while Donald’s Pool and Goofy’s Pool are just above them on deck 12.

Chip ‘n Dale’s Pool is on deck 14, between the Aurora and Briar Rose royal suites. Like all the other ships, Quiet Cove Pool (deck 13) is an adults-only retreat.

For kids up to 6 years old, the Toy Story Splash Zone and Slide-a-saurus Rex are on deck 12.

Discover the secrets of world-renowned Disney Imagineers—the creative minds behind Disney theme parks, Resorts and cruise ships—with hands-on activities and inventive experiments.

• At the Ride Studio, kids can design their own roller coaster attraction, drawing inspiration from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Space Mountain or Matterhorn Bobsleds—and then climb into a capsule where they will virtually ride their imaginative masterpiece.

Mickey and Minnie Captain’s Deck
Specially designed for the youngest sailors at Disney’s Oceaneer Club, Mickey and Minnie Captain’s Deck is a nautical playground inspired by the colors, icons, and magic of Disney Cruise Line.

• Little cadets can enjoy maritime-themed physical activities and sensory-style games—as well as play time with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse themselves.
• At select times throughout the voyage, the space will be open to little ones’ families for group play, and toddlers from “it’s a small world” nursery will also get dedicated access to the club to explore, learn and play with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.

Vibe, Edge, and The Hideaway host various activities aimed at tweens/teens both inside the youth clubs and throughout the ship, including pool parties and lunches.

Unlike the other Disney Cruise Line ships, Disney Wish doesn’t have nightclubs grouped together in one adult district. Keg & Compass and Triton Lounge are next to each other on deck 5. Luna is a two-story lounge on decks 4 and 5. The “Cinderella”-themed Nightingale’s, Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge, and “The Princess and the Frog”-inspired The Bayou are on deck 3, near the Grand Hall.

The Rose is a “Beauty and the Beast”-inspired lounge off Palo Steakhouse and Enchanté. Currents and the Cove Bar are near the pools.

The Disney Treasure’s Grand Hall (atrium) will have a blue and gold color scheme inspired by Agrabah. The golden statue will feature Aladdin and Jasmine riding the Magic Carpet, set within foliage to give it a floating effect.

Captain Minnie debuted a new adventure outfit for the Disney Treasure. Voyager Minnie is on the ship’s keel coin and on the bow’s medallion.

Peter Pan and Captain Hook will be the stern characters.

Dining

Disney Treasure will have two of the same restaurants as the Disney Wish.

• Plaza de Coco: Miguel will continue his familia’s story with two nights of musical performances and a menu of Mexican fare.
• Worlds of Marvel: Worlds of Marvel features food inspired by the different locations and organizations of the Marvel universe. On the Treasure, the restaurant will have two different shows.
• 1923: Dine on Californian cuisine in either the Walt Disney room or Roy Disney room, which both feature sketches, props, animation cels, and other items representing animated Disney films.

The ship’s ice cream shop will be the “Zootopia”-inspired Jumbeaux’s Sweets featuring playful pink interiors, Victorian-style architecture, and a sculpture of Officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. It will offer more than 20 flavors of handmade gelato, 16 flavors of ice cream and sorbets, specialty treats, candies, and more.

Entertainment

Disney Treasure will have an all-new, yet-to-be-announced Broadway-style stage production in the Walt Disney Theatre, alongside Disney Cruise Line’s pre-existing “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure” shows. On the upper decks one night of each sailing, guests can enjoy music and fireworks during the Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party.

AquaMouse

Disney Treasure will have its own version of the AquaMouse featuring the new story “Curse of the Golden Egg.” It will follow “Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse on a zany misadventure into an ancient temple for a glimpse of the legendary treasure within.”

Youth Areas

Disney’s Oceaneer Club on the Treasure will include the same rooms as the Wish: Marvel Super Hero Academy, Fairytale Hall, Walt Disney Imagineering Lab, Star Wars: Cargo Bay, and Mickey and Minnie Captain’s Deck. The Oceaneer Club is for children ages 3 – 12.

Disney Treasure will also see the return of teen clubs Edge and Vibe, and the It’s a Small World Nursery.

Nightclubs & Lounges

The “Jungle Cruise”-inspired Skipper Society lounge will take the space occupied by The Bayou on the Disney Wish, near the Grand Hall.

The Periscope Pub is inspired by Disney’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” Disney said that “the submarine-styled interiors will give guests a look at the watery world below through an intriguing glass ceiling.” It will feature “craft brews and light bites,” and occupy the spot taken up by Keg & Compass on the Wish.

Jade Cricket Café is inspired by Disney’s “Mulan.” It “will honor the Fa Family’s ‘lucky’ cricket, Cri-Kee, who will be represented by a tiny jade sculpture on the bar top.” The café will feature nods to “Mulan” through “the central moon gate to the plum blossom flowers adorning the walls,” along with blue walls and metallic counters inspired by Mulan’s armor.

Heihei Café is inspired by “Moana” with “scalloped seashells and reflective blue waters of the storied Southern Pacific isle of Motunui as it is portrayed in Disney’s animated feature.” The furniture will nod to “a traditional construction technique used by the Polynesian people to craft seafaring vessels.”

The Treasure’s central hub for daily activities and evening adult entertainment will be “The Lion King”-inspired Sarabi.

Disney confirmed the Disney Treasure will not feature Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge. It’s rumored this space will be occupied by a Haunted Mansion bar but that hasn’t been confirmed.

The original owner of the Global Dream, Genting Hong Kong, went into administration due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This left the 19-floor cruise ship unfinished and without a company to complete it. Disney acquired the ship and will finish it before an expected 2025 maiden voyage.

This ship’s home port will be Singapore as Disney Cruise Line expands to the Southeast Asian market. A name and more information have yet to be announced.
