The 50th anniversary medallions have been removed from most of the Fab 50 statues in Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom. Earlier this month, Disney announced Imagineers would be “sprinkling a touch of timeless pixie dust to refresh the Disney Fab 50 Character Collection,” teasing the removal of the medallions. The next day, the medallions were gone from Disney’s Animal Kingdom and EPCOT statues.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the medallions are now gone from most of the statues and the bases have been touched up where they used to be.
There are no more medallions on the statues of Sebastian and Flounder, Woody and Bo Peep, Edna Mode, R2-D2, and BB-8.
50th anniversary medallions remained on the Joe Gardner and Frozone statues when we last checked.
Magic Kingdom
Over at Magic Kingdom, the medallions remain on the statues in the Hub, but have been removed from other statues. There is no more medallion on the base of Cogsworth and Lumiere’s statue.
Nor on Pinocchio’s statue.
The medallion is gone from the Mad Hatter’s base.
The medallion had been removed from the golden blanket beneath the Cheshire Cat, but this change couldn’t be touched up as easily as the others.
A round piece with a rough surface and a small hole in the center remains on the blanket.
The original base of the Cheshire Cat’s statue was replaced for the addition of the 50th anniversary medallion, so the bases may be switched again.
The other Disney Fab 50 statues at Magic Kingdom are:
- Mickey
- Minnie
- Chip ‘n’ Dale
- Daisy
- Donald
- Goofy
- Pluto
- Winnie the Pooh & Piglet
- Jaq & Gus
- Dumbo & Timothy Q. Mouse
- Tinker Bell
- Lady & the Tramp
- Stitch
- Abu
- Orange Bird
For most of the statues, the medallion is on the base, but some have it more incorporated into the design. Stitch, for example, is holding the medallion in his mouth, and Abu is holding it up.
The refresh might involve more than just removing the medallions, but Disney didn’t share details.
The statues are interactive with MagicBand+. As guests approach and wave, the statues come to life with music and various phrases from the Disney characters. Last year, holiday sounds were also activated.
During “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” guests could purchase figures, pins, and ornament sets inspired by the statues. Walt Disney World theme park tickets also featured EARidescent 50th anniversary designs featuring some of the statues.
