Scrim and Scaffolding Grow Further at Monstropolis Construction Site in Hollywood Studios

On March 25 crew members were installing scaffolding around the water tower of Gonzo’s Royal Flush, which has now received an unthemed scrim. Meanwhile, scaffolding at the former MuppetVision 3D theater in Disney’s Hollywood Studios has nearly reached the top of the clock tower.

The building houses the land’s restrooms and will be re-themed to Monstropolis rather than demolished. The water tower will also remain, just with a new color scheme. Other theming like some pipes and the Gonzo’s Royal Flush sign have already been removed.

Currently, the water tower has a purposefully old and rusted appearance with a faded “Broadway Plumbing” logo. The backstory of Muppets Courtyard indicated Gonzo took over the Broadway Plumbing factory and turned it into Gonzo’s Royal Flush. The scrim is a light brown color and will possibly continue to be expanded over the coming days.

When we visited the park on Thursday, March 26, we saw crew members constructing scaffolding around the building’s clock tower. They had already installed more scaffolding above the theater’s main entrance, with poles now almost reaching as high as the building’s rooftop. The scaffolding has now nearly reached the top of the clock tower. Crew members removed brick from the facade in the approximate shape of a new marquee. Brick was similarly removed from the clock tower for new decorations.

Crews have also stripped bricks from the remaining entrance column. The opposite column and wall were demolished last week. We expect this side to come down soon. New brick columns topped by winged statues will then be constructed.

It’s a Wonderful Shop has completely disappeared behind a white sheet as the firehouse façade is removed, after the last of the windows were removed a few days ago. The firehouse façade that once covered the front of the shop by PizzeRizzo was stripped away a couple of weeks ago. Now it’s just scaffolding and tarps. Once a year-round Christmas store, It’s a Wonderful Shop never reopened following the park’s COVID-19 closure and only operated as a seasonal meet and greet location for its final years.

Monstropolis takes over the former Muppets Courtyard, along with a new coaster show building being added on as an expansion to the park in what was formerly a backstage Cast Member parking lot. The door coaster will be Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster and first vertical lift coaster.

MuppetVision 3D and PizzeRizzo closed permanently in June 2025 after Mama Melrose’s closed in May 2025. The coaster will be brand new to the area, but other Muppets Courtyard/Grand Avenue structures will be reused.

Mama Melrose’s will become Harryhausen’s, a restaurant visited by characters in the first Monsters, Inc. PizzeRizzo will likely be a new quick-service restaurant. Disney has not announced what will go in the MuppetVision 3D theater. Disney has not announced an opening timeframe for Monstropolis.
