Walt Disney Imagineering Files Permits for Set Installation Throughout Monstropolis at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Walt Disney Imagineering filed four permits this week to install set elements at various locations in the former Muppets Courtyard, soon-to-be Monstropolis, in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

All four permits are for frequent Imagineering collaborator Icarus Exhibits Inc. to “Install set elements.” They cover the former locations of the MuppetVision 3D theater, Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, PizzeRizzo, and the demolished Stage 1 Company Store.

Most of the Muppets Courtyard buildings are being repurposed for Monstropolis. The theater will house a new experience; Mama Melrose’s will become Harryhausen’s; and PizzeRizzo will become an as-yet unannounced quick-service restaurant.

Stage 1 Company Store, however, was demolished to make space for a wide walkway leading to the new Monsters, Inc. roller-coaster. Concept art shows a small pavilion near the store’s former location. This could be what Icarus Exhibits will be installing.

As for the other permits, their new sets could be inside or out. Crews have been getting the MuppetVision 3D theater ready for a new marquee and clocktower decorations. However, there will likely also be new sets inside.

The concept art’s marquee indicates the theater will be named “The Glob Theater,” a play on Shakespeare’s Globe. Text on the marquee reads “Meet Monstropolis” but we don’t know for sure what the final show will be.

Mama Melrose’s will get a complete makeover with a brand-new facade featuring giant chopsticks holding an eyeball. The interior is expected to go through a significant change, too, as it is transformed into the Japanese steakhouse.

Disney has not announced an opening timeframe for Monstropolis. Check out more construction updates.
