REVIEW: New Shrimp Spring Salad, Chicken Coq au Vin, and Crème Brûlée for Lunch at Be Our Guest in the Magic Kingdom

Yes, we’re back at Be Our Guest for lunch. Don’t believe me? Ask the dishes.

Even more items were added to the lunch menu here, and we had to make a second trip to finish sampling them all. We already reviewed the new Cannellini Bean Cassoulet, Chicken Spring Salad, and the Corn Bisque that replaced the fan-favorite Potato Leek soup, but we’re back to try the Shrimp Spring Salad, Chicken Coq au Vin, and Crème Brûlée.

Be Our Guest is already a popular lunch spot at the Magic Kingdom, offering fast casual, sit-down meals at quick service prices, but let’s see what happens when they tinker with the menu even further.

First off, the entrees:

Spring Shrimp Salad – $16.79

Sliced Golden Beets, Roasted Peppers, Chilled Green Beans, Pickled Shallots, Carrots, and Herb Vinaigrette served with Citrus-Poached Shrimp

The Spring Shrimp Salad is a good-sized salad with plenty of de-tailed shrimp (which isn’t always a given at Walt Disney World eateries.) The shrimp, surprisingly enough, wasn’t gross and tasted fairly fresh, which is also a Disney counter service rarity. The dressing added a lot of flavor, but the salad probably needed more dressing, so it’d be nice if they topped off the cup a bit more.

Overall, though, the golden beets were good, as were the peppers. Really, everything in the salad was of good quality. Maybe not for the price they’re charging, but it’s still a solid entree. Given that you’re served the salad in a plate, it gets somewhat unwieldily if you try to mix it, so keep that in mind.

Braised Chicken (Coq Au Vin Style) – $18.99

Coq Au Vin Braised Chicken in Red Wine with Bacon, Mushrooms, Roasted Asparagus, Blistered Heirloom Tomatoes, and Braised Leeks served with Mashed Potatoes

This, for a lack of a better word, is slop. The pork au vin dish was far better, making this a total downgrade. It isn’t a bad chicken breast underneath all that brown sauce, but I kept getting serious elementary school lunch school vibes from this dish. In general, it’s just a good rule of thumb to stick to the sandwiches at Be Our Guest.

Crème Brûlée – $5.99

Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée with Fresh Berries

This is certainly not a bad crème brûlée, but it is the strangest consistency of crème brûlée I’ve ever had. It’s really thick, so in texture and viscosity it’s almost like a cheesecake.That being said, it’s still very good, just don’t go into this expecting a traditional crème brûlée. For example, the top layer isn’t crispy or crackable, it’s really just all one gelatinous mass, making it more akin to a crème brûlée pudding.

If you order this dessert, you won’t be sorely disappointed, as it’s still pretty good for counter service… just don’t come in expecting traditional crème brûlée from the France Pavilion.
