Refurbishment projects are humming along to get everything looking shiny and new for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary on October 1. With refurbishments across the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, and more, it seems like everything is covered in scrim right now.
Disney’s Contemporary Resort is also undergoing a refurbishment. Guest rooms are getting an “Incredibles” theme. The whole resort is being given a thorough polish to look its best. Let’s take a look at all the work that’s going on at the iconic resort.
Exterior

The tarps along the lowest floor windows that we saw in our last update of the exterior are gone. A few scattered tarps are still hung, but they have been mostly removed as the project nears the finish line.

In the courtyard, a cherry picker sits idle. This is one of several used for the exterior work to safely access the outside of the building.

Here, a cherry picker can be seen in use as workers tend to the building.

This doorway leading into the convention center is still in use, though it is surrounded by scaffolding and fences covered in scrim.

The scrim runs the building’s length.

Only the center column of stairs is accessible.

Convention Center

Only the center doors are in use, matching the location of the single available stairway.

The entrance to the Ballroom of the Americas has been covered in black drapes. Signs explain the refurbishment to guests.

This seating area has recently reopened. It’s nice to see headway amidst a sea of construction.

Lobby

Many walls are stripped bare, exposing framing. Drapes conceal much of the work.

The cardboard floor runners have been removed since our last update, but the walls are now entirely behind pipe and drapes.

The lobby proper is cordoned off as it is being reimagined to fit with the new motif of the resort. The front desk has been moved to the second floor during the construction period.
The lobby refurbishment is set to be complete in late September and will feature an enhanced check-in experience offering an open, free-flowing layout with enhanced seating locations. A collection of modern art pieces, as well as behind-the-scenes photographs of the development and construction of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, will be on display.

The Wave… of American Flavors

The Wave… of American Flavors is under a major refurbishment as well. The entrance has been removed, but no visible progress has been made since the last time we checked on the project.

Guest Entrance

Fences with tarps conceal construction equipment and work from arriving guests.

Feature Pool

The water play area near the feature pool is also under construction. The tiling along the wall and the rubber ground cover have been removed, and the centerpiece fountain has been stripped of paint.

Thanks for the update on my favorite WDW resort.
Noticeably absent (so far) from the exterior or common area refurbishment is any sign of that hideous Incredibles theming we saw in the rooms refurbishment. Here’s hoping that continues.
what about the light up mickey ears in the garden are they still there?
