Paint Stripes Added, Then Removed, Now Re-Added to The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Magic of Disney Animation facade at Disney’s Hollywood Studios seems to be experiencing some technical difficulties regarding its paintwork.

The Magic of Disney Animation Painting Update

In one of our stranger construction updates for the new Magic of Disney Animation facade at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we noticed the return of decorative red paint stripes following their recent removal just days ago – a removal which itself followed their initial addition.

The design of the facade is directly inspired by the real Roy E. Disney Animation Building at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. The red stripes in question are inspired by a taller section of the building, visible above and behind the main entrance.

The existing building being used for the Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios building isn’t the exact same shape as the Burbank building, so the design will vary, but the new facade is clearly leveraging the same beige/red/green color scheme featured on the original structure.

One of the most notable differences is the lack of the taller structural element that features the red striping. It appears that this design element will be translated to the walls of the highest level on the Hollywood Studios structure, according to new paint work that saw the first in a series of red stripes added earlier this month.

As of Friday, April 17, the stripes were removed. As of the next day, April 18, however, the stripes have been re-added, with no apparent difference between the original work and the new paint.

You can check out the sequence of paint updates in the three photos below. The first photo shows the first two paint stripes on the right side of the building as they appeared on April 6. The middle photo shows their removal as of this past Friday. The third photo, taken this morning, shows the new stripes, including a slanted third addition.

It’s not clear why the original paintwork was removed, though it’s possible there was an issue in some part of its initial application, such as the width of the stripes, arrangement on the facade, the specific hue of red paint, or some other reason.

Later on Saturday morning, we spotted some workers laying red tape across the rest of facade’s upper walls, presumably marking the position and angle of future stripes in the series.

In any event, the red stripe pattern is expected to extend across both sides of the Sorcerer Mickey hat that adorns the building’s main entrance, based on the red tape seen above and on earlier concept art for the project.

The angle of the third red stripe is likely intentional, as additional stripes appear to steepen their angle as they extend towards the facade’s edges, based again on existing art and the recent tape work.

The Magic of Disney Animation is a new version of an opening-day Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction that was replaced by Star Wars: Launch Bay. The Star Wars attraction closed last year for the return of The Magic of Disney Animation.

We don’t know why the stripes were removed so quickly after the painting. It may be they didn’t have the right positioning or were the wrong shades.

Above are both concept pieces for Animation Courtyard, which is being transformed into the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard. Below is what the real Roy E. Disney Animation Building looks like.

The Walt Disney Studios Courtyard will have more green space and pavement featuring character autographs and handprints. Inside The Magic of Disney Animation, guests will meet characters, learn to draw with Olaf (instead of live artists), and play on an Alice in Wonderland playground.

Next door will be the new Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, set to open with the courtyard on May 26. Disney has not announced an opening date for The Magic of Disney Animation, but it is expected to open this summer.
