REVIEW: Mickey’s Birthday Food at The Magic Kingdom

The big cheese turns 90 this weekend and the Disney parks are celebrating with an assortment of food, merchandising, and events. Over at the Magic Kingdom, several food items have been highlighted and most are available through today at multiple locations in line or through mobile order. Of the three we tired, each finds its own way to celebrate the birthday boy, but only two really took the (birthday) cake.

Mickey Cheeseburger – $15.97

With Mickey himself branded on the top of a buttered bun, this burger is topped with macaroni and cheese, American cheese, cheese sauce, and spicy cheese dust. So yeah…it’s cheesy and, oddly enough, not terrible. While certainly a mess (a fork is more than just a suggestion here), the cheese sauce is not heavy and so it all goes down rather easily. One suggestion would be to flip over the top bun and add some mac and cheese to it. This cut down on overall thickness of the burger, providing more manageable bites.

One missed opportunity is the cheese dust, which is all for aesthetics. While one might hope it would add some spice to the palate, it adds no flavor at all.

Confetti Mickey Pretzel – $7.02

Mixing the savory and the sweet, this pretzel carried an excellent taste as the salt and marshmallow cream swirled together. We don’t get enough sugary pretzel variations at the parks. As for function, this usually shareable baked good became a sticky mess. As in “need a towelette” sticky. An attempt at cleanup left bits of paper napkin grafted onto this reviewer’s hand thanks to the marshmallow.

Birthday Bash Push Pop – $6.38

Filled with birthday cake pastry cream and layered with cake crumbles, buttercream, and glitter sprinkles, this push pop attempts an odd variation on the traditional cake pop, but instead of icing holding it all together, it’s a large tube of plastic. Deceptively small when pushed out of its larger container, the cake is overall underwhelming for the price and size.

While the top lid’s design does allow for the classic Mickey ears shape for the first bite, it quickly popped off with a minor amount of pressure and you’re basically left with a cupcake shoved into a plastic toilet paper roll. The novelty seems to be working though, as these were sold out at one location.

REVIEW: New Gourmet Flavored Cotton Candy at Disney Springs

Goofy’s Candy Company at Disney Springs is swirling a new limited time line of “Gourmet Flavored” cotton candy. In contrast to the classic confection offered in the store, this candy floss is made with all natural flavors and colors with 13 unique tastes, including birthday cake, berry smoothie, cinnamon bun, candy cane and the three reviewed – toasted marshmallow, gingerbread man, and egg nog.

Overall, with each reviewed, the main takeaways were the same. Gone are the colors you usually associate with cotton candy, as each was either white or a very pale off-white. This is due to the natural colors in use, but, in any case, the easiest way to distinguish one ball of sugar fluff from the other was now missing and, at times, we had to strain to tell the difference between flavors if we lost track of which bag was which. This might not be an issue with mango or lemon drop, but the subtleties of egg nog are completely lost when transformed into candied air.

So is this “gourmet” offering worth a shot? Perhaps. If a flavor really jumps out at you, give it a go. It’s cotton candy after all so spun sugar is still what you get in the end. Just don’t expect an overtaking bold flavor. The Jelly Belly of cotton candy this is not.

REVIEW: Gingerbread Churro Balls are a Perfect Disney Springs Seasonal Snack

With all the holiday offerings at Disney Springs, it’s hard to find a treat that tickles the seasonal seeking tastebuds without also leaving you in sugar coma. Four Rivers Cantina Barbacoa Food Truck, parked near World of Disney, has found just the right balance with their warm and freshly fried Gingerbread Churro Balls and, upon the time of review, there wasn’t even a sign letting you know they were there!

Formed in quarter-size round nuggets, the gingerbread is rolled in sugar, sprinkled with a dash of powdered sugar, and served with a side of cream cheese frosting for your dipping pleasure. Though sweet, they never overpower on their own, leaving the cream cheese to add an extra buzz if the eater so desires. Crunchy on the outside yet soft in the middle, the balls are an excellent texture and just the right size for sharing or pairing with a cup of coffee.

Though one might think a chocolate or confectionary shop would host the best seasonal snack at Disney Springs, leave it up to this barbacoa food truck to ring in the holiday the right way. Just don’t forget to ask if you don’t see it on the menu!

Price: $6.38 (including tax)

REVIEW: Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar Holiday Cocktails at Disney Springs

Ole Jock Lindsey, is getting into the Christmas spirit with two new cocktails at his Disney Springs hanger bar – one that hits the holiday spot while the other makes very little case to be a seasonal offering.

Jock’s Holiday Nog – $12.50

Crafted from Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Frangelico liqueur, Rumchata Caribbean Rum, vanilla and topped with peppermint candies, this holiday nog has a creamy taste without getting too sweet. Though not overly boozy on the front end, it does leave a little hazelnut tang on the tongue and would catch up with you quick as the vanilla eases you in to every sip. To be clear, this is not a peppermint drink – the flakes are all for show and smell, but, if you’re a fan of Rumchata, then this is the drink for you.

Jock Frost – $11.50

A mix of Malibu Rum, Rumchata, Blue Curacao liqueur and pineapple juice, this drink looks more like a winter wonderland than it tastes. With its fruit punch smell, perhaps the hope is to give you visions of Christmas office parties past, but the drink’s bold citrus flavors (the pineapple especially) feel more akin to a beach resort’s menu. The more traditionally seasonal Rumchata is completely lost in the Blue Curacao, but taken on its own terms, the cocktail is still good, especially if your lemon garnish is squeezed in.

So if you’re looking for a great holiday cocktail, Jock Lindsey’s Hanger Bar has that in its Holiday Nog. If you’re looking to forget about Christmas altogether, oddly the Jock Frost is for you.

REVIEW: Sprinkles Pumpkin Pecan Pie Cupcake at Disney Springs

Sprinkles Cupcakes marks the fall season with their Pumpkin Pecan Pie cupcake, a version of their pumpkin flavor with a gooey nut twist, but it proves almost too much of a good thing.

“We took our Pumpkin cupcake, cored it, filled it with our new pecan pie filling, then topped it with our marshmallow cream and gave it a nice hard toast,” states the company and, while the pecan flavors do contrast nicely with the marshmallow frosting, this is most assuredly more of a pumpkin dessert than pecan pie in the flavor department.

The pie filling itself is not overly sweet, but it is messy. When the cupcake was split for review, several nuts simply fell out. Due to this, it’s a cupcake that’s hard to share (as if you wanted to in the first place).

While attempting a complex hybrid of two Autumn standards, this cupcake doesn’t really do either justice and it’s perhaps due to the marshmallow frosting, which feels texturally out of place amongst the rest. Our recommendation is to get the original pumpkin cupcake. Sometimes less is more.

Both the pumpkin and pumpkin pecan pie cupcakes are available through Nov. 30th for $5.25 apiece.
